Imagine cozying up with your darling at your own private island getaway in Nicaragua. Tucked away on a lush islet on Lake Nicaragua, Jicaro Island Lodge is an ideal honeymoon hideaway or a secluded romantic retreat. In the romance department, Jicaro can be all you wish for; you can even book the whole island as your exotic wedding locale.
As one of the newest members of the prestigious National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World collection, this intimate luxury retreat was conceived back in 2007 when founder Karen Emanuel stumbled upon an “Island for Sale” sign while on a journey through Nicaragua. And so she set out to build a dream, creating a sustainable wellness retreat. Today Jicaro is world-renowned as one of Nicaragua’s most romantic destinations.
A sojourn at Jicaro showcases a perfect combination of activities. Couples can hole up inside their own casita, each of these nine units featuring two-level accommodations with large master bedrooms, living areas, decks and sweeping views of the Mombacho Volcano and the Sweet Sea, as the lake is known to locals. They can get starry-eyed by the pool and its lounge area, unwind with revitalizing spa treatments at the wellness center and – as the highlight – book a candlelit dinner for two on a private floating deck.
If couples want a dash of adventure and a taste of local culture, the surroundings offer a spectrum of choices. Don’t miss a wander around the gorgeous colonial town of Granada, just a short boat ride away. Sit on your own deck and identify colorful local birds like montezuma’s oropendula, ringed kingfisher and purple gallinule; each of the nine casitas comes with a bird flash card. To discover where these birds live and nest, take a tour by kayak, one of the more scenic ways to experience the islands that dot the lake.
A diverse range of habitats surrounds this tropical paradise, from lowland jungles to cloud forests perched on the edge of volcanoes. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, couples can go on nature treks and wildlife spotting excursions on the surrounding islands and the mainland wilderness. On the cloud forest trails of the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, discover rare plants and wildlife. Or walk the Puma Trail; a few of these felines still roam the volcano and if you get lucky, you may even spot one. No matter how you spend your time at Jicaro, sparkles of romance will spice up your escape.
