The underwater fauna of Lake Nicaragua

One of the most interesting aspects of Lake Nicaragua is the underwater fauna. More than 40 different species of fish live in the lake, including 16 species of native cichlids that constitute 58% of the biomass of the lake. Some of the most common fish for consumption are: mojarra, tarpon and crabs.  Guapote is another common species found in the Great Lake of Nicaragua and is highly appreciated by our guests at Jicaro Ecolodge for its exquisite flavor.

Located on a private island on Lake Nicaragua near Granada, Jicaro Lodge is a boutique hotel offering a variety of tours and activities.
